Improper installation can cause your oil seal to malfunction. While being tapped into place, it can become tilted or misaligned in the bore. That being said, setting it up correctly will help ensure that the sealing process is effective.

(6) Note that there should be a certain amount of lubricating oil on the lip of the oil seal.
Next, apply a small amount of grease to the seal lip(s) and the area of the shaft in contact with the seal. When using a double-lip seal, fill the small cavity between the two lips with grease as well. This both protects the lips during initial installation and break-in, and also acts as another barrier keeping contaminants out. When installing rubber-coated seals, apply lubricant to the outside diameter as well. This will help prevent the seal from rebounding or backing out from its mounting place.
Despite being a great substitute for more expensive high temperature resistant materials, polyacrylate has a problem of poor water compatibility and cold flexibility.
Another factor you need to consider is the type of lubricants that are more suitable for the seals. Check for the appropriate viscosity of the lubricant that’s compatible with the seal material.

How are they used?
Failure Modes of Oil Seals
Take off the gasket from the cover flange or cylinder head , noting how it is attached. Some gaskets have tongues that fit cutouts in the flange; others are stuck to the flange with sealant ; some just fit into the flange groove .
When the total eccentricity is excessive, the sealing edge of the seal lip cannot accommodate shaft motions and leakage may occur.
Total eccentricity is the sum of shaft runout and the housing-bore eccentricity.
Total eccentricity, shaft runout and housing-bore eccentricity are generally expressed in TIR (Total Indicator Reading).
PTFE is special in that a pre-tensioned spring is not required. This is because the material returns to its original shape when heated, also known as the shape-memory polymers (SMPs) effect. These oil seals are also supplied as integrated parts, where it only needs to be installed as one component.

The maximum allowable shaft speed is a function of the shaft finish, runout, housing bore and shaft concentricity, type of fluid being sealed and the type of oil seal material.
